Carmen Otto Reviews Michael R. French's "The Beginner's Guide to Winning an Election"

Thank you WOW! Women on Writing for the opportunity to participate in the book blog tour for this fast paced novel by Michael R. French!

The Beginner’s Guide to Winning an Election

The year is 2025. The United States is afflicted with global cyber attacks, economic crashes, foreign wars, and lots of anxiety. State budgets for public schools are hit hard. In a student body president race in a small city Indiana high school, popular, charismatic Matthew has his own consultants, bloggers, oppo researchers, and funds from an unidentified source that have helped him win every election since ninth grade.

Over-achieving, introverted Britain is a novice to elections, but as a history wonk, politics fascinate her. She also has a crush on Matthew. After she joins his SBP team, someone hacks Matthew’s website, leaking stories that the candidate is far from the Eagle Scout he pretends to be. Matthew and his team of 15 call the stories “spineless lies.”

Britain is stunned when she’s scapegoated by Matthew as the mystery hacker. Kids dump on her for betraying the school leader. Her reputation in shreds, she decides to enter the presidential race to clear her name. No one gives the novice a chance, but that only makes Britain more determined to find a way to win.

With the help of her three good friends, “No more secrets” becomes Team Britain’s slogan. For a while she stumbles in her campaign, until the anonymous hacker begins leaving notes in Britain’s locker, telling her which rocks to look under if she wants to beat odds-on favorite Matthew. She puzzles over who exactly is helping her—her favorite history teacher, an apostate on Team Matthew, or one of the many “undecideds” that impact any election?

Every mystery solved leads Brit to face a more complicated challenge, some threatening her existence…

The Beginner's Guide to Winning an Election is available on Amazon

“Michael French has penned a fascinating, fast-paced, futuristic story about a determined high school senior named Brit who runs an against-all-odds campaign for student body president. There are scenarios that bedevil the imagination: dirty tricks, cyber and other tech attacks, love intrigues, and a picture of how the personal growth of one individual can shape a collective future. As a politician with several elections under my belt, I couldn’t put the novel down.”
-- Governor Bill Richardson, former member of Congress, US Ambassador to the United Nations, US Secretary of Energy, and Governor of NM

“If you like cheering for an underdog and savor a complex, exciting story that seems to spring from today’s events, you’ll love The Beginner’s Guide to Winning an Election. We could use more real heroes like Brit, the leading character in Michael R. French’s newest novel. She’s a young woman with tremendous tenacity and a strong moral compass who rises above her innate shyness to make a difference in her world.”
—Anne Hillerman, author of the New York Times best-selling Leaphorn/Chee/Manuelito mystery series

Review by Carmen Otto

I enjoyed reading The Beginner's Guide to Winning an Election by Michael R. French. At first I was nervous it would be difficult to understand because I'm only in 6th grade, but I found the book to be easy to follow. Brit was my favorite character, but I also thought Nathan and Matthew were easy to relate to. I was so happy that Brit found the truth and didn't lie about anything and my favorite part was when Brit won by 11 more points than Matthew. I am the type of animal lover who is drawn to help the runt of the litter kitten or the calf who who is struggling on her feet - so cheering for the underdog is definitely my thing. When the underdog becomes the top dog it's pretty exhilarating!

During the week it took me to read The Beginner's Guide to Winning an Election, my mom and I would talk about it casually (because she read it as well). Even though this book takes place in the future, it brought up a lot of the stuff going on at my school today. My mom and I would talk about the book and how it relates to me. We used the word "integrity" a lot and even though Brit isn't perfect, I think she's a good role model.

I hope my school library gets a copy of The Beginner's Guide to Winning an Election so other students my age will read it and enjoy it as much as I did!

~Tricia & Crystal

About the Book:

Finding Myself in Borneo is an honest and buoyant chronicle of a young Canadian man's adventures during 1968-70, while teaching secondary school as a CUSO volunteer in Sabah, Malaysia (North Borneo). Travel with Neill McKee on his unique journey through vibrant Asian cultures as he learns the craft of teaching, the Malay language and local customs, and gains many friends in his small community. He climbs the highest peak in Southeast Asia—Mount Kinabalu, has a love affair, and navigates Borneo's backwaters to make his first of many documentary films. McKee travels by freighter to Indonesia, where he discovers the scars of that country's recent genocide, a contrast to his hilarious motorcycle journeys in Sabah with his American Peace Corps buddy. They make a hallucinogenic discovery—North Borneo is, indeed, J. R. R. Tolkien's famed Middle-Earth of The Lord of the Rings! The enterprising duo establish the North Borneo Frodo Society, an organization Tolkien joins.
McKee's second Sabah sojourn and other return trips offer the reader the opportunity to match the early anecdotes to what in fact happened to the land and people who touched his life, and he theirs.

Review by Tricia Schott-Baldwin

I wasn't sure if this book was completely for me. Due to health concerns, I haven't been able to travel as much as I would like and had some hesitation about how I might feel reading and reviewing a travel memoir. I thoroughly enjoyed Finding Myself in Borneo and can say whether readers ravel or don't travel, they'll find something to love about this memoir!

As much as I certainly enjoyed reading about the places and experiences, what stuck out most for me was the entire premise of trying to teach in a completely foreign atmosphere. I have several educators in my family and hold the teaching profession in high regard. It would be easy for someone to look at Mr. McKee's task as a teacher as daunting and yet as he writes about his experiences it is obvious he loves the culture, the people, and his adventure. His enthusiasm and positive attitude really made this an enjoyable read for me.

I didn't read Finding Myself in Borneo very quickly (not because it wasn't enjoyable, but because we had some major changes going on in our household as well as some health episodes). I suppose this is how most people read though - a chapter here and a chapter there...and though I don't generally read this way, I felt it made this book even more special. I will forever think of this book as I would a delicious dessert - not something to be devoured quickly, but something to be enjoyed bite by bite with a smile on my face. Deliciously inspiring and engaging from beginning to end!

Synopsis
In 1960, the Badre family emigrates from Beirut, Lebanon to the United States, a dream come true for fourteen-year-old Nasib.

Nasib struggles to assimilate as a teen in Albany, New York. With limited English skills, he attempts to learn new customs, make friends, and adapt to a different culture. In Beirut, the Badre family was well-known and socially privileged. In America, they are unknown nobodies. Nasib adopts his father’s name “Albert,” and to further Americanize his name, young Albert becomes “Al.”
Despite the many frustrations and difficulties, Al’s ultimate goal is to become a successful American. The new anonymity actually inspires the young man. Excited by the opportunities available to him in his new country, he determines to make a potent contribution to society.
As he strives to adapt, Al reads voraciously, becoming increasingly interested in religion and philosophy. Books become his “American friends,” and reading soon prompts him to ask deep theological questions about his family’s Lebanese Protestant roots, his mother’s conversion to Catholicism, and the contrast between the Protestant and Catholic faiths. This ultimately leads to his Catholic conversion.
Al’s search for meaning in life leads him to social activism among New York City’s poorest. And, in time, to graduate studies, where his desire is to improve the human condition through information technology.
Al Badre-- like many other American immigrants--works his way through hardship to achieve a meaningful place in his adopted nation.

About Albert N. Badre

Albert Nasib Badre is an American author born in Beirut Lebanon. He immigrated to the United States with his family in 1960 at the age of fourteen. His family made Albany, N.Y. their first home in America where he attended a private Catholic high school through his Junior year. After three years in Albany, the family moved to Iowa City, Iowa, when his father accepted a professor position at the University of Iowa. He finished his senior year at Iowa City High School, then went on to the University of Iowa where he got a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies.  After college, he spent a year as a social worker in New York City. Deciding social work was not for him, he went on to pursue graduate studies at the University of Michigan where he got his Ph.D. in 1973.
He spent the next thirty years at the Georgia Institute of Technology, and today he’s Professor Emeritus of Computing. During his tenure at Georgia Tech, he was an international consultant specializing in designing technology to enhance the human experience.  Dr. Badre was an early pioneer in the field of human-centric design, with some thirty years of experience in human-computer interaction, learning technologies, and human-centric e-learning. His background combines expertise in the empirical methodologies of the behavioral sciences and the design approaches of the computing sciences.
Dr. Badre authored numerous technical papers, is co-editor of the book Directions in Human Computer Interaction, and the author of the book, Shaping Web Usability: Interaction Design in Context, which was adopted in several dozen courses worldwide. His memoirs, Looking West, is the story of his coming of age immigration to America and subsequent conversion to the Catholic Church.
Today, Dr. Badre and his wife live in Providence, R.I., near his son and family, where he leads a very active volunteer life, in service to the community.

Review by Elizabeth Hansen

I really enjoyed Finding Myself in Borneo. It was an enthralling memoir. Neill McKee is very descriptive, and goes into background details, talking about the history of Borneo. You can tell he’s passionate about his experience, and wishes to share it with others.

Finding Myself in Borneo has inspired me!.
As I read, I thought:,

“I would like to try teaching in an underdeveloped country”.

My favorite parts of the story were:

• McKee’s relationships with the natives of Borneo.

• The descriptions of his Canadian home.

• The fond memories of it both Canada and Borneo.

The memories Neill McKee shared in Finding Myself in Borneo were so heartfelt. I feel a bit like I found a spark in myself in Sabah. McKee’s love and fondness for his fellow human really spoke to me.

I loved the childhood memories of “Africa,” or the place McKee called Africa; it is clearly close to his heart as well as being close to his house. The way he describes everything made me want to walk in his shoes, especially those descriptions of the people. The travel was clearly more about the path than the destination. Overall, I found this to be a good read, and feel  Finding Myself in Borneo  should be read by all -  travel lovers as well as those who only travel through lovely memoirs such as this!
