I was looking for a muse and I found it at The Bakery Bar in Kewaunee, Wisconsin. This delightful establishment is run by a energetic and enthusiastic young couple, Sam and Kayla. Just a hop skip and a jump (20 ish miles if that's how you calculate things) from Two Rivers or Green Bay, The Bakery Bar is nestled in downtown Kewaunee at 408 Milwaukee Street.
As I walked in, I was greeted with a cheerful hello and the delicious smell of fresh bakery and delicious coffee. They serve breakfast and lunch all day (I've always loved soup for breakfast and biscuits and gravy for lunch - so The Bakery Bar caters to my unusual pallet with no judgment. They also serve a full bar which means if you're in the mood for a bloody mary (which I've never been in my entire life) or a glass of wine you can get it with your cinnamon rolls or your amazing reuben sandwich. The wines come from local shops (Von Stiehl and Cold Country) and the bloody mary's are a meal in themselves and they offer a variety of flavored vodkas (dill, bacon, horseradish, etc...) to spice up your life!
Sorry - I got sidetracked with all those options. Let's get back to my experience. I had an opportunity to try a sample bloody and though it was delicious they're still not my gig. This one had horseradish vodka which was fabulous and the toppings were adorable and tasty: beef stick, olive, pickle, string cheese, brussel sprout, mushroom, and probably something else I'm forgetting. After trying the bloody, I decided on a delicious glass of Von Stiehl's Coastal Cab which is delightful any time of day but paired beautifully with my biscuits and gravy as well as my reuben sandwich. The bakery is made on site and is so fresh you feel like you're in Gramma's kitchen! The biscuits and gravy was crave-worthy but let me tell you about the reuben - it's the best I've ever had. Literally! I'm considering moving to Kewaunee Wisconsin!
I've traveled a bit in my life and you don't get this figure by cutting corners - I've had reubens in New York and California and anywhere in between and this was by far the absolute best! Let me highlight the many reasons why:
Fresh rye bread baked daily on site with love!
Homemade kraut!
Thick slices of corned beef sourced locally from Otto's meats!
I didn't ask about the thousand island dressing or the cheese but I can only assume those are made on site or sourced locally! Fresh and fabulous is the best way to describe the feast I experienced!
I left with muffins to take home to the children, and a hand crafted latte' for my drive home. I may have also indulged in a cookie - but as you read on Monday, I'm just trying to drink more water this week, so there's no shame in my calorie game! The carrot cake muffins were filled with what tasted much more like cheesecake than frosting which is a huge turn on for this cheesecake lover!
While I was at The Bakery Bar, I got to know Sam and Kayla a bit. They have an adorable little girl who they raise while they run their business. I had an idea on my drive to Kewaunee that The Bakery Bar came about with a husband who wanted to open a bar and a wife who wanted to open a bakery and there's a bit more fun to the story, but I was pretty spot on. This little gem has been around 3 years and is exactly what is needed in the Kewaunee community. Covid took out a bakery, a coffee, shop, and a bar and Sam and Kayla have done a fabulous job meeting the needs of the community with one single (and adorable) shop. I had a most lovely experience and look forward to my next visit! Let me know if you'd like to come along!
