Black Madonna; The Pope's Deadly Obsession by Linda Lee Kane

Thank you WOW! Women on Writing for the opportunity to participate in this book blog tour!

About the Book:

Luci de Foix was nine when her parents were killed in a car accident. But was it an accident? Unbeknownst to Luci, a group known as The Order, under the protection of the Pope, has been watching her family for many years, waiting for the day that a diary written in the thirteenth century would be delivered to her family—a journal that contains a key to a lost codex—and they would do anything to get it. Early one morning, when Luci is twenty-nine, a bloodied young man delivers a book, claiming it’s from her late grandparents.

Plagued by panic attacks that have left her crippled, Luci struggles to overcome her fears, avenge the death of their family, and search for the lost codex. But who can she trust? Everyone seems intent on betraying her, even the gorgeous, enigmatic Max, a man with secrets of his own.

Book Review by Crystal J. Casavant-Otto
How Many Stars?
4.5
The Review:
I enjoyed the mystery and intrigue throughout The Black Madonna; it was a nice mix of fantasy and thriller with just enough facts and history to play tricks on the mind. Readers who enjoy historical fiction, fantasy, thrillers, or sci-fi will delight in this dark tale and it's young (yet most times mature) heroine. My favorite part was the relationships throughout the book - there were so many times when I found myself wondering "can she really trust so and so?" and I was impressed with Luci's tenacity. She never wavered in her quest to avenge her family's death and she overcame her fears time and time again.
The Decision:
Not a book I would share with my younger children - a little too violent. A quick read I would absolutely recommend to another adult friend.

5 Star Review for Albert Nasib Badre's "Looking West; The Journey of a Lebanese-American Immigrant"

The calendar says spring, a few days ago it was nearly 60 and today the yard is covered in snow and the highways are littered with accidents...  I am hopeful spring is on it's way and in the meantime WOW! Women on Writing is helping promote another wonderful book for a very talented author. It is my pleasure to read, review, and share the journey of Albert Nasib Badre with his memoir, Looking West.

Please contact me today if you'd like to help with this or any other book tour. If you've never participated in a tour, feel free to inquire and I'll be happy to explain how it works - you don't even have to have your own blog and it's a wonderful opportunity to help promote authors while reading the latest books before anyone else can get their hands on them!

Send an email today - email address: crystal@wow-womenonwriting.com or crystaljotto@gmail.com

Now onto this beautiful journey of a Lebanese-American Immigrant named Albert Nasib Badre and his moving memoir Looking West.

Looking West begins in 1960 as the Badre family emigrates from Beirut, Lebanon to the United States. This is a dream come true for fourteen-year-old Nasib.

Nasib struggles to assimilate as a teen in Albany, New York. With limited English skills, he attempts to learn new customs, make friends, and adapt to a different culture. In Beirut, the Badre family was well-known and socially privileged. In America, they are unknown nobodies. Nasib adopts his father’s name “Albert,” and to further Americanize his name, young Albert becomes “Al.”

Despite the many frustrations and difficulties, Al’s ultimate goal is to become a successful American. The new anonymity actually inspires the young man. Excited by the opportunities available to him in his new country, he determines to make a potent contribution to society.

As he strives to adapt, Al reads voraciously, becoming increasingly interested in religion and philosophy. Books become his “American friends,” and reading soon prompts him to ask deep theological questions about his family’s Lebanese Protestant roots, his mother’s conversion to Catholicism, and the contrast between the Protestant and Catholic faiths. This ultimately leads to his Catholic conversion.

Al’s search for meaning in life leads him to social activism among New York City’s poorest. And, in time, to graduate studies, where his desire is to improve the human condition through information technology.

Al Badre—like many other American immigrants--works his way through hardship to achieve a meaningful place in his adopted nation.

He finished his senior year at Iowa City High School, then went on to the University of Iowa where he got a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies. 5 Star Book Review by Crystal J. Casavant-Otto

Looking West is a memoir about Albert Nasib Badre’s journey as a Lebanese-American immigrant. I was touched by his story and drawn completely in by his storytelling. The relationship factor throughout the story helped me feel kindred with Badre (even though I’ve never left the country much less immigrated).I was drawn in from the first page:

“I was home from school for the regular two-hour lunch recess and
was wet and hungry; I certainly had no idea this would be a
pivotal day in my life. All I cared about at that
moment was lunch, the main meal of the day.”
My mother sat down with my two older
brothers and me at the table….”
Not only did these opening paragraphs seem believable to me, but I could picture myself as a sibling at the table or as the mother, preparing her children for an exciting yet unimaginable change. I immediately related to the family and characters in Looking West and couldn’t help but feel as if I were on the journey with them.

Badre is as I said before, is a fabulous storyteller, but his personality also makes this a winning story. His positive attitude from childhood into adulthood drew me to him (as both the author and as the character in the memoir). There are so many examples of this positive vibe, but one that stuck out in particular is chapter 8:

“THE FUTURE AND THE PAST
ABRUPTLY FADED, REPLACED BY
the excitement of the present moment
as Ramsey said,
‘Let’s go explore the ship.’”
Imagine being a 14 year old boy leaving your country and yet instead of fear or anger, feeling excitement and being drawn to explore with your brothers. As Badre tells this story, he could easily remember the enthusiasm he felt as a teen – this spoke volumes to me about his resilience and overall positive attitude.

There wasn’t any point in Looking West where I felt disconnected from the story or family. Badre’s storytelling and overall tone kept me wanting more. I felt connected to the family and vested in a sort of relationship with them. This was an insightful memoir; it drew me in and helped me understand what it was like to be a teen in the 60’s and an American Immigrant. This is a story everyone should read right now as it is sure to spark empathy during this time of political and economic unrest in the world around us.

Madeline Sharples’
WOW! WOMEN ON WRITING
TOUR
OF
Papa’s Shoes
A Polish shoemaker and his family
Settle in small-town America

Tour Begins June 3rd 2019

About the Book:
Papa’s Shoes, a work of fiction about immigration with a feminist and historical bent. At 99,968 words, Papa’s Shoes is a stand-alone novel with series potential.

Ira Schuman is determined to move his family out of their Polish shtetl to the hope and opportunities he’s heard about in America. But along the way he faces the death of three of his four sons, a wife who does not have the same aspirations as his, and the birth of a daughter, Ava, conceived to make up for the loss of his boys. Ava grows up to be smart, beautiful, and very independent.

Besides having a feisty relationship with her overly-protective mother, Ava falls for the college man who directs her high school senior class play. With the news that she wants to marry a non-Jewish man, Ira realizes that his plan to assimilate in the new world has backfired. Should the young couple marry, he must decide whether to banish his daughter from his family or welcome them with open arms. Even though he won’t attend their wedding, he makes her a pair a wedding shoes. In his mind, the shoes are simply a gift, not a peace offering.

Praise:

"From an insightful storyteller, Papa's Shoes, is a heartwarming story of courage and love. Author Madeline Sharples has created an epic journey with intriguing twists and surprises along the way. From days of old in Poland to cultural and economic realities in America, this is an awe-inspiring novel about families, generational history, and the incredible power of change. You truly won't want to put it down!"
—D.A. Hickman, author of Ancients of the Earth: Poems of Time

"Author Madeline Sharples tells the intimate story of an American family, of immigration, tragedy, renewal, and love with grace and the delicate touch of a poet. There’s a raw kind of sweetness in this rich and epic saga."
—David W. Berner, author of The Consequence of Stars and A Well-Respected Man

“An immigrant family’s braided history – its conflicts, losses, and secrets – come to life in Papa’s Shoes. With loving attention to detail, Madeline Sharples transports readers from a Polish shtetl to the Illinois town where Ira and Ruth settle, and shows us the intimate workings of their
marriage. This family’s triumphant journey to the American Midwest will inspire you long after
you’ve closed these pages.”
—Eleanor Vincent, author of Swimming with Maya: A Mother’s Story

A longer synopsis

On a cold and pouring night in Sokolow Poland, Ira Schuman carefully steps over the red mud puddles on the streets, sad, weary, and soaked. He dreads what he’ll find when he arrives at his two-room house in the Jewish section of the stetl. He envisions his mourning wife, Ruth, angry he wasn’t home when three of their four boys died during a flu epidemic.
As he enters the silence in what was once a home full of the loud voices and cries of little boys is deafening. However, he can’t wait to embrace Ruth, comfort her despite his own grief, and tell his surviving son about his love for America.
Ira’s goal is to become Americanized and bring what’s left of his family to a small town in Illinois, when he has enough money and an established business. Ruth doesn’t want to leave Poland and the graves of their three dead sons.
After their initial cold and difficult reunion, Ira keeps his promise to impregnate Ruth before he goes back to Illinois. Three years later he sends her the money to follow him to Illinois with their son age 10 and little girl, Ava, age three. Ruth agrees to leave Poland because of fears that the Russian army will recruit her son.
After a short stay in Chicago, the family moves to Danville IL, where Ira joins his brother in their shoe-making business. Though free of his long hair, beard and forelocks, and wearing modern clothes without the four-cornered yarmulke he threw into the Atlantic Ocean, Ira wants to bring a semblance of Orthodox Jewish life to his family and his new town. He creates a synagogue, hires a rabbi, and arranges the delivery of kosher meats. He also begins an affair with a chubby but curvy redheaded widow. Ruth, who smothers Ava and tries to keep her a little girl, has grown fatter and more unkempt, always wearing the same tight-fitting black dress she wore in Sokolow. She wants no part of Ira’s synagogue work.
Ruth keeps her hold on Ava, antagonizing her daughter. They argue continuously throughout Ava’s school years. Ava gets the lead in her senior high school play, and she and the director, a student at the local college, strike up a relationship – she tells her parents they are just friends when he picks her up to take her to school events.
Her brother, in law school in Chicago at nights and working in the textile business during the day, comes home and warns his parents that if they don’t move her away from this gentile, he will take her to Chicago himself. Ira agrees to let Ava go; Ruth does not. In the end her brother’s argument wins. Ava, ever respectful of her parents and out of her love for her brother, tells her director friend that she must leave. They are devastated but stay away from each other until the day before her departure.
In Chicago, Ava’s brother introduces her to a suitable man. He’s a bit of a milk toast, messy, and not very motivated in school or business, but he’s nice and attentive so she goes out with him for quite some time. Her rationale is that dating him will protect her from meeting someone she could actually fall for. She also experiences the modern ways of young women in the 1920s. She goes to dance halls and speakeasies, speaks flap talk, works as a seamstress, designs her own short and swingy dresses, and lives freely away from her mother. Her suitor proposes, but Ava says, “What a pretty little ring,” instead of yes.
After continued pleas from her director friend and her still undying love for him, Ava returns to Danville as a mature and determined young woman. She withstands a blow-up with her parents when she tells them she wants to marry her gentile friend. Ira throws her out. That night he goes to the synagogue to say the mourner’s kadish for his daughter but decides to break up with the red-headed widow and mourn his relationship with her instead. To assuage his guilt, he makes her a pair of shoes that she wears at her wedding.
While Ava is sad not to have her family with her at her wedding, she is hopeful that her mother and father will come around. Her biggest fear is that she will never see her brother again, the man she loved and looked up to all her growing up years. However, she is happy with her decision to marry her love no matter how they feel.

She lived through four wars and served in the Israel Defense Forces for two years. Unlike her first year of service in an armored division in the Golan Heights, she served her second year serving in the medical corps where she interacted directly with the injured soldiers of the Peace of Galilee war and their families. This interaction, along with the exposure to the hospital atmosphere, fascinated Michelle and further touched her heart. She went on to get a BS degree in Nursing in Tel-Aviv, and practiced internationally for 32 years in various positions in the surgical field and quickly advanced into health care administration. During her career she worked in the Operating Room, Recovery Room, and CCU—along with many other duties.

Writing was Michelle’s outlet at first, but it soon became her passion. Now, she is a full-time writer. Her international background, along with her military and nursing experience is always at the tip of her pen. Her first novel, Pinnacle Lust, started the Pinnacle trilogy and won the Beach Book Festival in the Romance category, as well as received several honorable mentions in other book contests. It was published to rave reviews.

Michelle is a world traveler who enjoys cooking epicurean food and creating original recipes. She currently splits her time between Florida and Georgia, where she is at work on her next two books.
