Banged-Up Heart: Dancing with Love and Loss is an intimate and clear-eyed account of finding love late and losing it early—and of the strength it takes to fall deeply in love a second time, be forced to relinquish that love too soon, and yet choose to love again.
When her husband of thirty years dies suddenly, Shirley Melis is convinced she will never find another man like Joe. Then she meets John, a younger man who tells her during their first conversation that he has lived for many years with a rare but manageable cancer. She is swept off her feet in a whirlwind courtship, and within months, made brave by the early death of a friend’s husband, she asks him to marry her! What follows is a year-long odyssey of travel and a growing erotic and creative partnership— until a mysterious bump on John’s forehead proves to be one of several tumors in his brain and spine.
The nine months that follow are filled with a life-threatening infection, three brain surgeries, radiation, and chemotherapy. Two years and one week after their wedding, John dies at the age of fifty-nine. More than just a love story or a memoir of mourning, Banged-Up Heart comes down solidly on the side of life. It takes you deep inside an ordinary woman, her deeply felt grief butting up against her desire for more than companionship: passion, sexual fulfillment, and self-realization. It bears eloquent witness to the wild trust it takes to fall madly in love and risk profound loss—a second time. Ultimately, it shows that it is possible to dance with a banged-up heart.

I cannot begin to tell you how Banged Up Heart by Shirley Melvis has changed in me. Shirley lost her husband after a long marriage. She was blessed to find love again in John. After a short whirlwind courtship, they married. Devastatingly, John’s cancer steals their time and his life. As a mother of a disabled child, and a healthcare worker, I loved diving into Shirley’s point of view. Of course I read it in my head. Hearing the passion and emotion that this narrator put into Shirley’s memoir, has completely changed me. This lady kept me tuned in and interested, even after I knew the whole story. I learned to look at my residents in a new way. Their health and care, was not just about them, but also about their loved ones. I cannot thank Shirley enough for sharing this story with us all. This story is worth every second. It takes you through all the stages of dying and living on.
Banged-Up Heart: Dancing with Love and Loss is available in print on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and IndieBound. The audio version is available on Audible.

It is a fascinating odyssey, a journey both creative and erotic as Shirley and John work lovingly together to blend their dreams—until a mysterious bump on his forehead starts them on a tragic struggle against the dark hand of fate.

I hadn’t heard of Banged-Up Heart by Shirley Melis so the Audible version is the only way I’ve been exposed to the story. I was very brave of the author to share such an intimate account of her loves and losses. I listen to audio books quite often and this particular narrator was such a pleasure to listen to. She has a very clear voice with lots of depth and emotion – a great fit for this type of memoir. Thank you WOW! Women on Writing for approaching me to listen to this story and participate in the book blog tour for Banged-Up Heart by Shirley Melis.

-----Review by Penny Harrison
I thoroughly enjoyed Banged-Up Heart by Shirley Melis. This book is an autobiography that was, I'm sure, not easy to write. Shirley's life was filled with great love and great sadness which led to the "banged-up" state of her heart. Through the pages, you learn about the two great men that shaped her life. Both would be with her for a shorter time than she would have wanted, but both men left her with memories and a greater sense of who she was and what she wanted. This is a fabulous book and the narrator's voice voice is clear and inviting and helps you to experience Melis's relationships with Joe and John until you know these men nearly as well as Melis had. Touching, inspiring and truthful, the story told is one of a life lived to the fullest. A life with losses but also with growth and joy. I am grateful for this glimpse into her experiences and you will be, as well.

About today’s reviewer:
Penny Harrison is a mother of a vivacious 17 year old daughter, a wife of 18 wonderful years,
and equal opportunity crafter with a very busy schedule. In addition to her “day job”, she is also an independent consultant for a craft company and has a small craft business. She lives in a small town in Wisconsin on the shore of Lake Michigan and enjoys her summers, “cooler near the lake”.
Ingredients:
1 cup room temp. butter
1 cup white sugar
1 cup brown sugar (I like dark)
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
3 cups flour (I like unbleached)
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2-3 T cocoa powder
1/2 C graham cracker crumbs
1-2 C tiny marshmallows (the ones you would use in hot cocoa)
Instructions:
1) Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
2) Start at the top of the list (with the butter) and add the ingredients together. Stir thoroughly after each ingredient is added.Careful not to over mix once you add the marshmallows - just make sure they're combined.
3) Using 2 table spoons, place your dough on the cookie sheet (I like an airbake cookie sheet - ungreased) and do not roll, form, or worry about any of that. Just 'plop' them on there. I can only fit 9 cookies on a sheet, but of course the size of your 'plop' is going to determine that.
4) Bake on the center rack (this may mean for optimal cookie goodness that you can only bake 1 sheet at a time) for 11 minutes. Set a timer ... 11 minutes means, 11 minutes!5) Remove from oven promptly and allow to 'rest' for 1 minute before using a spatula to move from the cookie sheet to a cooling rack for drying/cooling.
6) After fully cooled, place cookies in an air tight container. I keep my Folgers coffee containers, they are plastic with a tight fitting cover and they work fabulously. Resist the urge to keep your cookies in a cookie jar that is not air tight - they'll get dried out and lose some softness

-----Interview with fellow memoir author Madeline Sharples
Madeline: What moment or event sparked the inspiration for your book Banged-Up Heart? Shirley: I felt blindsided by John’s death. I had to figure out what had happened to me. So often, writing helps me see more clearly. At first I just wanted to relive our wonderful relationship. But after I got started I became wiser, I think – more curious, more demanding. I was curious about John and his behavior toward me. Had he intentionally kept the severity of his illness a secret from me? I was determined to face the questions I had never asked him. In the end, celebrating the relationship was not nearly so important as getting as close to the truth as I could.
Madeline: What would you say are three things that you found to be the
most difficult part of writing a book? Shirley:
1)Getting to my inner story, guided by questions (asked by my editor) that took me deep inside, into intense emotional places
2) Facing truths about myself and having the courage to put them on paper
3) Learning the craft of fiction writing to make my memoir come alive
Madeline: How soon after your first husband died did you meet John? Shirley: I’d been widowed nearly two years when I met John.
Madeline: Weren’t you wary when John told you he had a “manageable” kind of cancer? Shirley: When John told me, on our walk together in Raleigh, NC, that at 40 he’d been diagnosed with a rare cancer, he also told me that he controlled it with periodic infusions of Rituxan – a drug similar to chemo but different – and assured me there was a backup treatment in the wings. His attitude was so positive I wasn’t concerned about his health. I was concerned about our differences. He was an honest-to-goodness rocket scientist whereas I had nearly been done in by algebra. My high school principal, who tutored m, laughingly called me Euclid Melis!
Madeline: What lesson do you think we can all learn about love? Shirley: When it’s good, it’s something to be relished and nurtured.
Madeline: How do you live with/support a loved one who has brain cancer? Shirley:You take each day as it comes, living in the present as fully as possible.
Madeline: How did you survive after the loss of a loved one? Shirley: I was helped by joining a grief group and seeing a therapist.
Madeline: What would you say to your readers about how to grieve? Shirley:When you suffer the loss of a loved one, allow yourself to grieve. Whether unexpected or anticipated, the loss is real. The absence of that person can be almost palpable, as though a part of your body has been cut away and you’re left bleeding. Your ability to think clearly may be distorted by the pain of loss. If you have a friend who offers to help you -- drive you to appointments, take you to dinner – accept. Friends who have never experienced the loss of someone beloved may not know what to say, but they want to ease your pain. Don’t be afraid to ask for their help, and take comfort in their gifts of food, flowers and cards.
If you’re working when your partner dies, take some time off to do what needs to be done, but go back to work if you can. The structure of a job will give you something other than your loss on which to focus. You may find yourself tearing up at unexpected moments, but that’s understandable.
If you can, join a grief group, and see a therapist. In a grief group you learn empathy; hearing other people’s stories is affecting, and you realize you’re not alone. With a therapist you can explore the roots of your anguish, something you might not be able to do alone, and perhaps shouldn’t try to do with good friends since the burden of grief can be overwhelming for others.
Madeline: How can people use creativity to work through loss? Shirley: Expressing emotion through writing, painting, role playing, singing, playing an instrument -- any number of creative endeavors – can open your mind and heart to strengths and insights you may not realize you possess.
Madeline: What did you learn about yourself during both marriages and their aftermaths? Shirley: I see myself now as stronger than I knew. I am not done in by loss. I’ve lost a lot but my heart is still open to other people. I don’t fear the possible consequences of my decision to share my life again. There’s something about renewal. When I committed myself to John, it was a new beginning, refreshing and heartwarming, and now that I’ve remarried there’s a newness that energizes me. I see myself if not as a butterfly, then as someone who still has wings to spread.
.....And one last question from Crystal here at Bring on Lemons..... Crystal: What made you decide to turn Banged-Up Heart into an audio book as well as print? What have you learned in this process?
Shirley: Inspired by a close friend whose vision is failing -- she shared with me her regret that although she owned my book, her poor vision did not allow her to read it – and a total stranger who, after telling me she was blind, asked at a book reading, When can I hear your book? I started pondering the possibility of offering Banged-Up Heart as an audiobook.
Some months later, at a monthly meeting of the New Mexico Book Association, the program speaker, Laurie Bower, riveted my attention. Laurie, an audiobook narrator, talked about the process of producing an audiobook. I asked her for her business card and a couple of weeks later, called her. Before meeting Laurie, I’d thought I would read my own book. But I hadn’t realized how much there is to it. Reading excerpts at book signings/readings is a lot different from reading an entire book and I would have to be coached. Meanwhile, I had started writing a second memoir and wondered how I would make time to produce an audiobook.
In response to Laurie’s suggestion that she do a 15-minute sample reading for my reaction, I sent her several pages of text that included six characters. When she gave me the word, I plugged my ear buds into my laptop and listened to Laurie read. And then I asked my husband Frank to listen. “Marvelous,” he said. I agreed. The depth of her voice and her ability to articulate clearly impressed both of us. Within days, I signed a contract with Laurie. “I’ll read a few chapters at a time and download them through ACX (an Audible affiliate) for you to listen to and edit,” she said. “I should have this completed so we can meet your goal of having it out by Valentine’s Day.” I liked the idea of having the audiobook out by February 14th, the date my paperback had been published two years earlier. What I did not foresee was that I would be consumed with moving from our house in the village of Galisteo, New Mexico, into a new house closer to Santa Fe the month of January. By the time I completed my proof-listening, I was behind the eightball. I knew from Laurie that ACX would require time to put the audiobook through a process called “Quality assurance.” In fact, it didn’t take long, but I missed my February 14th target by one week. On February 21st, ACX sent me a congratulatory email: “Banged-Up Heart: Dancing with Love and Loss is now on sale at Audible, and it will be available on iTunes and Amazon with the next few days.”
I learned that hiring a good narrator does not mean the author is off the hook. Nor should she be. The best of narrators cannot be expected to know how to pronounce all of the placenames in your book. In my memoir, I did not use a lot of “he/she said.” Because of this, Laurie occasionally read dialogue in my voice when it was someone else who was speaking. Catching these falls on the shoulders of the author. Proof-listening by the author is an all-important component of producing a good audiobook.

-----5 Star Review by Wisconsin Educator Cathy Hansen
I have to start off with a straightforward confession: Memoirs are not my thing. That said, when friend asked me to read this book, I looked at the description, and I was intrigued by the description of a dramatic tale about remarrying after a spouse’s death only to lose one’s second spouse far too soon.
Banged-Up Heart is definitely NOT your typical memoir. I found myself double-checking the cover during the first few chapters of the book, certain I’d picked up a sweet romance novel by mistake. The beginning of the book is charming and reads quickly, with Shirley’s chance meeting with John, as well as her first date since the loss of her first husband. There’s even a bit of comedy, as I read the details of that first date and thought, “Seriously? Who says THAT to a woman he wants to impress?” As someone who does not typically read memoirs, I enjoyed that little bit of comedy to help ease the me into a book that I knew would eventually bring heartbreak and sadness.
That’s the thing with a memoir like this--you already know the ending. You know she’s lost her second husband. You just don’t know exactly when, the details of how, or the life they lived in between. There has to be something interesting to keep you reading, and Shirley Melis delivers that something with the details of their adventures together. I started the book thinking, “How awful! That poor woman!” I ended the book thinking, “Good for them. What a life they packed into such a short time!”
Do not be mistaken--the story will take its toll, and I believe anyone who reads it will be touched in a different way and make a different connection with the story. There are parts of the book that are very difficult to read, because the moments they describe were very difficult to live. For me, there were several things that tug at me even now, a week after finishing the book. First, the fact that Shirley got remarried at all took tremendous courage. Having discussed this topic with my husband who faced the real potential of leaving our family forever if anything had happened to him while deployed in a war zone, I simply cannot imagine the challenges she experienced.
The second aspect of the story that really hit me was the idea of slowly watching the decline of a loved one’s condition, knowing that loved one would not recover. My family is experiencing this now, with the cancer diagnosis of one of my grandparents. Like reading her memoir, we know death is coming, we just don’t know when, or what will happen between now and then. I was in the middle of reading Banged-Up Heart on a recent trip to visit my family member. On this particular visit, I had to provide that family member with more assistance than I had in the past, and I too noticed the unbelievable weight loss caused by cancer. The realization that time is very short was still on my mind later that weekend, when I read a part in Shirley’s book where she compared John’s condition to that of a holocaust victim. It was like she was reading my own thoughts on the awful effect that horrible disease has on the body!
I think the biggest take-away from Banged-Up Heart is to take risks and love well. Don’t dismiss the possibility of love even when you think your chance for love has passed. Bucket lists are not just for “some day” or “eventually” because we never know just how long we or our loved ones have. Thank you, Shirley Melis, for a difficult read, but a good read. Thank you for sharing your story. I'm sure those who enjoy audio books will love the Audible version - I listened to a sample and the narrator sounds fabulous!

*****THANK YOU WOW! WOMEN ON WRITING*****
About today's reviewer:
Cathy Hansen is a wife, mom, teacher, independent
beauty consultant, and small business owner. She and her husband operate SeedsNBeans, a local nature store, in Two Rivers, Wisconsin.
We are privileged to have back with us - Shirley Melis and her memoirBanged-Up Heart. Readers and listeners of this book have had so many wonderful things to say about this inspiring story and now it's available on Audible !
Banged-Up Heart: Dancing with Love and Loss is available in print on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and IndieBound. The audio version is available on Audible.
About the Author: Shirley Melis is a longtime business writer, travel writer, and newspaper columnist who traveled the world interviewing everyone from busboys to heads of international organizations before launching a career in public relations in Washington, D.C. With Banged-Up Heart, she now takes her writing in a new direction, delving deeply into her own personal story of finding love late, losing it early, and discovering the strength to choose to love again. It is a fascinating odyssey, a journey both creative and erotic as Shirley and John work lovingly together to blend their dreams—until a mysterious bump on his forehead starts them on a tragic struggle against the dark hand of fate.
A graduate of Vassar, Shirley Melis has created an intimate memoir bearing eloquent witness to the kind of wild trust that can grow in the heart of an ordinary woman thrust into circumstances that few others must face. Now retired, she lives in Galisteo, New Mexico.
I was skeptical when I was asked to review the book Banged up Heart. It is not a type of book that I would normally pick up and read all on my own. I am a person that likes a good mystery or thriller. My attention has to be captured within the first few chapters or I will never pick up the book again. I am not a person that reads about love stories. That was immediately what I thought this book was going to be all about. At first, it was a little bit of a struggle to get myself to read it. I think that was because of my preconceived expectations. Before I knew it, I was done with the book.
This book is more than just a love story. It is more about how two people can battle odds together and become closer than ever. It also is about how to deal with emotions after a loss. For anyone that has suffered any type of personal loss, I think it would be an easy story to relate to. It is heartbreaking and exciting all at the same time. It made me think about how I would handle a situation similar. It really made me sort of evaluate myself. Could I be strong? How would I process the emotions that Shirley was feeling? Would I have handled it the same way?
It was very well written and easy to read, once I got in to it. I think this would be the perfect book for anyone that likes books that tug at the heart strings a little.

I am so very glad I listened to Banged-Up Heart. It is an emotional and heartbreaking story about how Shirley lost her husband, Joe, just to fall into a whirlwind love and marriage with her subsequent husband, John. After they marry she discovers that he has serious health issues that center around the rare type of cancer he has. As his health continues to decline, the plans that they made for the future begin to slip away and they are forced with some difficult decisions.
This book was deeply moving in so many ways. Shirley talks about the many issues and discussions that come about when your spouse is terminally ill. She masterfully illustrates her daily struggles from simply getting John to his appointments to getting him out of bed when he becomes too weak. There are so many things discussed in this book that I had never considered being an issue, but I am so glad that Shirley brought them to light in case I am ever in a similar situation. This is definitely not a “how to” type of book, but the various trials she encountered have really opened my eyes to how difficult end-of-life care can be without help (or even with help sometimes).
I was touched by the raw emotion presented in this book as well. Shirley does a great job of explaining her emotions and what she is feeling throughout, and doesn’t miss a single detail even when describing the memory of the last time she saw John. It was heart-wrenching, at times, but just as healing. Shirley’s resilience after losing not one, but 2 husbands she loved and adored, gives me hope for healing from even the most painful losses.
I'm sure this book is delightful to read, but the audio version really added depth to each encounter. The narrator's voice is lovely and heartfelt. I appreciate the opportunity I had to listen to the audio version of Banged-Up Heart and would definitely recommend others to listen to it as well!
